BUILDING MATERIALS AND METHODS

Picture
Construction was made to Chateau De Chillon in 1189, by Peter II of Savoy. The outer walls, towers and main buildings were all modified during this time, these changes continued into the thirteenth century.

Then, in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries the castles major structures were built. The gate was also rebuilt, and the walls and towers were heightened. At the end of the 15th century Chateau De Chillon was completly built.

Chateau De Chillon is a ‘harbour castle’ but is also a ‘rock castle’.

Thick walls (2-5m thick), slit windows, pulleys, winches and stone masons were some of the methods used to build a castle. A simple machine, known as the crane was used to lift heavy materials. To operate it, a person stood inside the big wheel and walked.  This caused the machine to lift the heavy object attached to the end of the rope.

Chateau De Chillon is built mostly out of stone. Even the dungeons were carved out of rock. However, there are a few elements to the castle that are made out of wood.
