Chateau De Chillon is located in Veytaux, Switzerland. It has stunning views of the Alps where it sits on a small island in the far western end of Lake Geneva (also known as Lake Leman).  The castle was first owned by the Bishops.  There is evidence that it dates back to the 10th- 12th century, from the date of 1000. The reason Chateau De Chillon was built where it stands today, is because the ruler gained control over important trade routes to Italy and elsewhere. Therefore, they could extract duties or tax (It is a strategic location).
